Celebrating 150 Years

1874-2024

Since 1874.

Ambler Savings Bank was chartered in 1874 to provide financing for local residents to purchase and build homes. Since before the town was named Ambler, the Bank has served the community by offering loans, deposit accounts and philanthropic support. The Bank has grown to employ 60 people with four branches and offices in three retirement communities across Montgomery and Berks Counties.

Since the beginning, we’ve been a trusted community partner – reinvesting in the community and its citizens. Today, we are looking ahead to another 150 years of growth – evolving with our customers, technology, and the communities we serve!

History Timeline

1874

The Village of Ambler was made up of 35 residences, a lumber yard, a coal yard and two mills. A group of businessmen gathered at the home of Davis Yerkes and created the town’s first building and loan association. Incorporated as the Ambler Building and Loan Association, the mission was simply to provide affordable home financing.

1949

By our 75th Anniversary, we had financed over 2,000 homes. In the immediate years after World War II, the Association financed over 100 homes for veterans returning home.

1955

We built new offices at 44 East Butler Avenue and changed our name to Ambler Savings and Loan Association to better reflect our expanding mission. We quickly outgrew this new space and purchased land at 155 East Butler Avenue.

1962

We moved into the newly constructed headquarters building at 155 East Butler Avenue, which featured a large lobby, and for the first time, a drive-up teller window.

1974

We opened our first satellite branch in Schwenksville. It served the community until 2018.

2002

Our name was changed to Ambler Savings Bank to reflect the full line of consumer and business banking services we offer.

2005

Grand Opening of the Limerick Branch at 438 West Ridge Pike, Limerick.

2011

Grand opening of our Fairview Village Branch at 3009 West Germantown Pike, Fairview Village.

2014

We celebrated our 140th anniversary and embarked on our most ambitious project – the demolition of our Ambler headquarters and reconstruction of a new building in the heart of historic Ambler.

2016

Our new headquarters opened to the public on April 25, 2016. The building incorporates ecologically friendly features and houses a modern bank branch connected with our lenders, support staff, and senior management. Most importantly, the space allows us to grow and continue to serve our customers as an independent, mutual financial institution for many more years.

2017

We merged with Bally Savings Bank giving us our first branch in Berks County. This merger allowed the customers of Bally Savings Bank to access an expanded menu of banking products and services previously unavailable while still enjoying the benefits of a community bank. In 2019, the Bally Branch was completely remodeled and a drive-thru station was added.
